Worldflight – The Virtual Flight for Charity
WorldFlight Australia is a virtual round the world flight that has raised over $200,000 for The Australian Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Worldflight is an annual event which takes place all around the globe in November. Flight simulator teams meet online to fly their simulators on a predetermined route around the world in real time. Starting in Sydney, the teams depart under direction of Air Traffic Controllers from the Vatsim organization who monitor and control all of the flights. The journey is usually 45 legs and rotating crews give up their own time to man the simulators 24/7 to participate in the event. Teams from overseas collect donations for their own respective charities but here in Australia it’s all about our flying doctors! The event is also open to individual flight simulator enthusiasts and many join the official teams in support and they are also encouraged to make donations.
In November 2015 the Worldflight Perth team flew the Aerosim Solutions 737 simulator around the globe for the second time covering more than 36000 nautical miles in real time! This year a second Perth team joined in the fun with Greg Hateley and his team participating with Greg’s fantastic 747-400 simulator located in Belmont. Our teams decided to combine resources and together we raised a total of $8,952.00 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service which is a fantastic effort a lot more than the $5000.00 raised in 2014. The event was a great success and the two crews enjoyed a celebration night at the home of Velocity738 with some of the boys from “Brown town” taking the 737 for a spin. We will be back to do it all again in November 2016 so please give your support when the crew members of Worldflight Perth call on you later this year!!
